Whats another way to say...?

im writing a paper on the crucible and my topic is about how the setting effected the characters. im looking for another way to say "the (topic of PP) had an effect...." im looking for an alternative for saying that because i don't want to sound too repetitive, thanks :) also can anyone help me with saying how the peoples religon effected them
