Help with .avi files?

ok I have some avi files that I downloaded and some of them play with wmp but others wont, I tried opening them with quick time but they still wont open, and I really dont want to go downloading a bunch of stuff because I dont want viruses or anything, anyone got any ideas on how to fix it? I updated wmp to version 11 but it didnt help.
