How do you research for possible correlations between two or more factors?

Not talking fancy lab research or anything, but looking them up on the Internet. Statistics? Look up one factor (e.g., morbid obesity) and hope something is said of the other (e.g., child abuse survivors)? Then reverse the process for cross-checking? Where do you start picking at the Gordeon Knot?
