How do I get the drain out of the bathroom sink?

I have a regular bathroom sink drain you could say. The lever doesn't open or close the drain anymore but I wanted to take the drain completely out so that I could clean the gunk around it including my hair circling it. Please help me in this endeavor. THANKS!
